Louis Majorelle was a French artist, locksmith and furniture designer born in Toul, France in 1859. Louis was the son of a carpenter and was educated at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris under the tutelage of Francois Millet. Majorelle worked in his family workshop in Nancy and contributed to the development of Art Nouveau. Majorelle created many products between 1900 and 1904 - the furniture differed in stylistic and botanical motifs. After World War I, Majorelle continued to produce furniture in a more modified style as Art Nouveau was replaced by Art Deco. After Majorelle's death in 1926, his studio was managed by his student Alfred Levy. Louis Majorelle furniture is still highly sought after by collectors today.
