In the Victorian era, snakes were not perceived as fearsome. Rather, they symbolized:

Eternity (because a coiled snake forms a continuous circle)

Rebirth and transformation (shedding its skin)

Wisdom

Protection

Most importantly, snakes symbolized eternal love.

The real reason snake jewelry became so fashionable is Queen Victoria.

When Prince Albert proposed to her in 1839, he gave her an engagement ring in the shape of a snake coiled around her finger, set with an emerald (her birthstone).

When Queen Victoria wore it, the entire British public followed suit.
